Whenever I parked my Mystery Electric Scooter on Metro Vancouver's sidewalk, a small crowd will usually gather. When I tell them that my scooter (which uses a friend's recently-invented hyper efficient hub motor) can travel for 40 kms and doesn't emit blue smoke from a tailpipe, they are amazed. They are even more amazed when I pull out my battery charger and charge it, sometimes outside a bookstore or community centre, even in the rain. (I teach my clients how I do this without shorting out the charger.)
Since 2002, I've organized 14 electric bike and scooter events, sometimes involving city counselors, at shopping malls, markets, and Science World. City-TV asked me to demonstrate the Rain Cape for E-Bikes on Breakfast Television. Friends at the tennis club borrowed my electric scooters and bikes and had a hoot.
The good news is that these Light Electric Vehicles have become faster, more durable, and even flat-proof. They can also be souped-up to outperform a 4-stroke 50cc Vespa gas scooter.
However, there are a lot of people who haven't been able to afford the $2,000 for electric bikes and scooters. Banks don't often loan on small amounts like that.
